Fly Fishing with Cross Current Guide service

Man has it been a long time since I did a post. Life has been extraordinary busy but there's always time to do some fly fishing on the upper Delaware when the march bronws are out and about. This particular day was a little different than the norm. This day was spent with Joe D of Cross Current Guide Service floating the main stem of the Delaware river. This was the first time I fished with Joe and it wont be the last!  We met up in the A.M at a local fly shop to get some needed items and Joe greeted us with a smile and a "lets do this"! attitude. It's a nice feeling when the guide is just as excited as you are. So after arriving at the boat launch we geared up and started our float downstream on the main stem and it didn't take long to put a nice wild brown in the boat.

My buddy got the first one of the day a healthy 20" main stem brown.
The fish ate a tan body caddis

A few more pics from the day

A solid 22" brown!
THANKS JOE!

I fished with my Winston BIIIX all day and it was a pleasure.
What a smooth rod even casting 50-60ft.

This brown couldn't resist a size 10 march brown klinkhammer

This was for me the coolest part of the day. While taking a break and enjoying a nice chicken lunch Joe packed for us we noticed some risers a few yards from the boat......

Hooked -Up!

A beautiful wild main stem rainbow comes to hand.

This was the smallest fish of the day a 18" brown.
That's small??

The big boy of the day.
Alligator brown!

This is one day I will never forget.

New Jersey Opening day 2012

Well Trout season officially began in N.J this past Saturday and the stocking trucks and "baiters" are out in full force. But this opening day found me and 2 friends on a much quieter and simpler river in Pennsylvania. We opted for a favorite Pocono mountain stream with hopes of catching a few wild brook and brown trout. This particular stream is on the small side and "hole hopping" is generally how we fish the stream. The fish were rising to Quill Gordons and Hendricksons in the afternoon and the trout weren't reluctant to take our fly's.

Sipping bugs

There is no better sound in the world than listening to wild trout take bugs from the surface and even better when it's your fly!
Thanks to the extraordinarily mild winter we experienced here in the east the fishing has been great.
In my neck of the woods we have been catching fish on dries since February but the bigger bugs are starting to show up now. A little early than normal but hey I'm not complaining. Lately the Quill Gordons and Hendricksons have been out and the fish aren't shy to take them from the surface. Some years we get great hatches but the water is still cold and the fish don't seem to interested in the bugs on the surface.

That is not the case this year.

Here's a few pics from the last two nights.

This fish wanted the female Hendrickson parachute.

Still getting them in the dark.

All the gink in the world couldn't help this fly out.

Thanks for reading!

Scouting

There are many aspects about fly fishing that will always get me excited like watching a trout take a natural from the surface or watching friends catch fish. But I really enjoy looking for new places to fish and I don't mean buying a " Places to fish" book. There is nothing wrong with those books I own plenty and use them frequently. But in this post I'm referring to streams that are only talked about among good friends over a few beers and usually a narrow dirt road will lead the way.

We never saw another angler all day on this stream or any visible sign of previous fisherman.

There is no better feeling than finding a new stream full of wild brook trout.

After spending a little time exploring we decided to leave the lower end of the stream for another day and headed to a very familiar wild brown trout stream. The trout here were also very willing to take our flies.

All of  these fish were caught in New Jersey.
